All conference participants will be flying into Catania’s Fontanarossa Airport (CTA).

For those of us joining the Pre-Conference Tour of Mt. Etna on Wednesday, the 12th of June 2013, you will need to arrange for a flight that arrives in Catania on Tuesday, the 11th of June.  Airport buses depart from Fontanarossa approximately every 45 minutes and make the 20 minute ride into Catania’s city center for about 6 euros.  You’ll find the bus just outside the right-hand door of the terminal, about 50 yards away.  The “Cathedral Square” stop is the one closest to our hotel where we’ll spend the night of the 11th (we recommend you visit the hotel’s website HERE and bring a print-out of their neighborhood map).

In addition, taxis will be available just outside the arrivals terminal at the airport to take you directly to your hotel in Catania.  To avoid misunderstandings, ask to know the fare price before entering the taxi.  A ride to the city center takes approximately 15 minutes and should cost around 30 euros.

Pre-conference participants will have two night’s accommodations (the 11th in Catania and 12th in Ortigia), all meals (beginning with dinner on the 11th through breakfast on the 13th), and air-conditioned coach service from our hotel in Catania to Mt. Etna and then on to our hotels in Ortigia on the 12th of June.

All other conference participants need to arrive in Catania on Thursday, the 13th of June.  You will be met by an Open Center representative at the airport and travel together by coach to Siracusa and to our hotels on the island of Ortigia.

Ortigia Arrival Info

Open Center staff will be available at each hotel to meet and welcome you to Ortigia, and to give to you your conference packet, which will include maps, conference schedules, locations and directions.  We begin with our evening orientation at the conference hall of the Consorzio Plemmirio.  The Plemmirio is an area of breathtaking, protected, sea around Siracusa, and a Unesco World Heritage site, and its conference hall is the setting for our weeklong plenary sessions and some of our workshops.

Returning Home or Continuing On…

Our main conference will conclude after lunch on Tuesday, the 18th of June.  Participants returning home at this point will travel by air-conditioned coach back to the Catania airport in time for evening flights departing 6pm or later.

The Open Center will be able to assist with accommodations in Oritigia for the night of the 18th of June for anyone whose travel plans necessitate flying home on the morning of the 19th instead.

Those of us journeying on to the Post-Conference Islands of Malta and Gozo trip will stay on for dinner in Ortigia.  We’ll then board a coach bound for Catania Airport and an 11:55pm flight to Malta.

After our Post-Conference Malta and Gozo program, participants will travel by coach to Malta International Airport in Luqa (MLA), after breakfast on the 23rd of June, in time for flights departing at 12:30pm or later.

Those of us joining the five-night Post-Conference Journey through Sicily that concludes in Palermo will be brought to Palermo’s Centrale railway station after breakfast on the 23rd.  Here, you will be able to catch the Prestia Comandé airport bus.  It runs every 30 minutes from the piazza in front of the train station to Palermo’s Punta Raisi Airport (PMO).  The 50 minute trip costs about 6 euros.

You should be able to book return flights departing at 11am or later.  And will want to be on the 9am bus to be at PMO in time for such a flight.

Anyone on our extended Post-Conference Sicily tour that concludes in Taormina after breakfast on the 25th of June will travel by coach to Catania’s Fontanarossa Airport in time for flights departing at 11am or later.
