Travel Info for The Esoteric Quest in Granada Spain

We recommend booking your flight to Granada if you are traveling from the US. While there are now international flights to Granada from about six locations, most cross-Atlantic flights will likely change planes in Madrid or Barcelona.

Many participants, especially those joining us from Europe, Asia or Africa, may find it most convenient to fly into Spain via Malaga. Travel information from Malaga to Granada is provided below.

Arrival at Granada’s Federico Garcia Lorca Airport
Granada airport  is 16km from the city center.  Both taxis and airport buses are available at the airport for the 30-minute trip into the city. Taxis cost approximately 17 euros to the city center, 23 euros to the Albaycin, and 25 euros to the Alhambra (to phone for taxis, dial: 958 280 654).

Airport bus times are scheduled to coincide with flight arrivals and run throughout the day and evening. Service costs approximately 3 euros and travels to the city center along the following route: Airport – La Caleta – Av. Arrival at Malaga’s Pablo Picasso Airport
Malaga Airport  is the nearest international airport to Granada. 

Both buses and trains travel from Malaga to Granada. It is easy to reach both the bus and train stations of the city by taking either a taxi or the #19 bus from the airport (an approximately 30-minute ride). The local bus stops at both the train station and inside the bus station, and costs around 1 euro. 

Malaga to Granada by Bus
The bus is the cheapest and fastest way to travel from Malaga to Granada. Look for the Alsina Graells ticket counter at the Malaga bus station (estación de autobuses). A one-way ticket costs around 9 euros. Buses run nearly every hour between 7am and 9pm for the 90-minute ride to Granada. The Granada bus station is located on the outskirts of the city. You will need to take either a taxi or a local bus from the Granada bus station to your hotel visit: schedules and ticket purchases.

When booking your flight, please note that it is difficult to get to Granada from Malaga by public transportation after 9pm. A taxi from Malaga to Granada costs around 100-120 euros.

Granada by Bus from other Spanish Cities 
There are many buses each day to and from the other large Spanish cities. The main bus company in Andalucía is Alsina Graells. To buy tickets online and check bus schedules, visit: schedules and ticket purchases.

From Madrid
Bus connections between Madrid and Granada are frequent and cheap. A one-way ticket costs less than 15 euros for the 5-hour ride. There are many bus stations in Madrid, but you can only travel to Granada from the Avenida de America or Estación Sur (nearest metro stop: Mendez Alvaro) bus stations. Buses run at least every hour.

From Seville
In Seville there are two bus stations. To travel to Granada you must go to Prado de San Sebastian station (and NOT to Plaza de Armas) for the 3-hour bus ride to Granada.

Granada by Train
Granada’s train station is centrally located at Avenida de Andaluces off Avenida de la Constitución (phone: 958 271 272). Granada is not on a high-speed line.

The train from Madrid takes approximately 5 1/2 hours and about 4 hours from Seville. Most people choose the bus rather than the train when coming from Malaga or Almeria. The RENFE  web site gives full, clear information in English about train travel in Spain.
