Killary Harbor Boat Trip

Our first afternoon in Connemara will take us aboard the Connemara Lady to experience the panoramic views of Killary Fjord, Ireland’s only glacial fjord. In the inspiring beauty of the rugged landscape of North Connemara, we’ll learn about the natural and social history of the fjord as well as the ancient mythology surrounding these waters. We will sail to the mouth of the fjord, the gateway to the majestic Wild Atlantic beyond, enjoying the spectacular and uninterrupted scenery that would be otherwise impossible to reach.

The Ancient Sites and Archeology of Connemara

We will spend the afternoon with Michael Gibbons, one of Ireland’s leading archeologists and an expert on the ancient sites of Connemara. We’ll visit sites from the Mesolithic to the modern world, revealing the spiritual and material depth of Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. This is an opportunity to see excavations buried in remote corners of West Ireland’s impressive landscape, but holding direct links with other ancient cultures throughout Europe.

A Visit to Kylemore Abbey

Built in the late 1800s as a private residence and then converted into an abbey in the 1920s, after the original home of the Benedictine sisters was destroyed in Belgium in the First World War. Kylemore, with its lovely walled garden and lakeside location, offers a meditative opportunity to experience serenity and beauty. Our tour will introduce us to the stories of the many generations of people who have lived, worked, studied and prayed inside its solid granite walls, brought to life through video, artefacts from the Kylemore archive, historical costumes, and carefully restored period rooms.
